Pentadyne designs, manufactures and markets advanced flywheel power systems that provide high-quality, reliable power for power quality sensitive customers. Pentadyne’s initial product – the UPS Voltage Support Solution™ (VSS 120) - provides a reliable, environmentally sound and low maintenance ride-through power solution to either replace or supplement batteries in UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) systems. During a grid disturbance, the VSS 120 can provide 120 kW during 20 seconds for sufficient ride-through to permit an orderly system shutdown or to allow a standby engine-generator to come on-line.

Advantages over lead-acid battery technology include lower maintenance cost, smaller footprint, faster recharge rate, and reduced environmental impact.

With the successful completion of tests at EDF’s R&D laboratory on a Pentadyne unit, the next step will be a field trial at a customer site in 2005. This ability of EDF to serve as a trusted partner advising its customers on UPS solutions helps validate the Pentadyne system.
